Born in Spain, Xavier Cugat's family moved to Havana, Cuba, when he was three. Always musically inclined, he packed up and moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times newspaper during the day and labored to put together a band at night. After a few years of playing smaller clubs in the L.A. area, Cugat finally got his break when he and his band secured a job at the prestigious Coconut Grove nightclub in 1928. His style of music caught on, and Cugat was instrumental in bringing Latin music to the attention of the US public. In the '30s and '40s he was nicknamed "The Rumba King" because of his popularization of that Latin dance. In Cugat's film appearances he usually played himself, even if the character had a name other than Xavier Cugat, and he and his band appeared in several memorable MGM musicals in the '40s. After suffering a stroke in 1971, Xavier Cugat retired.- Actress

Her childhood was shaped by the Spanish Civil War and the modest means of her working-class family. Her musical talent developed early and she was already singing classical cantatas at the age of seven. From 1942 she trained in singing at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica in Barcelona. She was able to study thanks to a scholarship. In 1954 she finished with the best award. The following year, Montserrat Caballé made his debut in Reus, southern Catalonia, in the leading female role in the comic opera "La serva padrona" by the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. She then received a three-year engagement at the theater in Basel from 1956. From 1959 to 1962 she worked at the theater in Bremen. During this time in German-speaking countries, she learned to speak the local language fluently. 1965 was the beginning of her great international career. On April 20th of this year, she briefly replaced her pregnant colleague Marilyn Horne in the opera "Lukrezia Borga" by Gaetano Donizetti, which took place as a concert performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Montserrat Caballé was enthusiastically celebrated by the audience, highly praised by the press and mentioned alongside renowned personalities such as Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. With this event she became a star and the doors of the most important international houses opened to her. Immediately afterwards, the Metropolitan Opera contacted her with a permanent contract. There she started in the role of Marguérite in the master opera "Faust" by the French composer Charles Gounod. This was followed by a record contract with the music label RCA Records in New York City. In 1962 she met her future husband, the tenor Bernabé Marti. This year she appeared with him in the opera production of Giacomo Puccini's "Madame Butterfly" at the Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona. Two years later, the two married in the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat in the mountains of the same name near Barcelona. From 1971, the soprano performed regularly at the State Opera in Hamburg. Her favorite composers include Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini. In addition, Caballé often worked as a concert singer.
In 1986, she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. She became known to a wider, more operatic audience through her legendary performance on the rock crossover title "Barcelona" on the occasion of the 1992 Olympic Games there, which she sang together with Freddie Mercury and which comes from the 1987 album of the same name. This and other engagements show the versatility of the artist Caballé. The solo title was written by Mercury. Her album "Friends For Life" was released in 1997 with the participation of Bruce Dickinson, Johnny Hallyday, Johnny Logan, Gino Vannelli and Helmut Lotti. A year later, Caballé was awarded the Bambi. The singer celebrated her comeback as an opera diva in 2002 at the Gran Teatro des Liceo in Barcelona after ten years away from the stage. In 2007 she was awarded the Echo Klassik Music Prize for her life's work. In the same year on April 1st she returned to the stage of the Vienna State Opera after 18 years. She played and sang the role of Duchesse de Crakentorp in Gaetano Donizetti's opera "La Fille du Régiment", an international production between the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera New York.
The diva's other awards include the Order of Doña Isabel La Católica as the highest title of the Spanish government, R.SH Gold for pop music from Radio Schleswig-Holstein, the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the French Cross of Honor for Arts and Science. Montserrat Caballé also volunteers as a United Nations ambassador. With her excellent bel canto interpretations, she is one of the greatest singers in the field and its innovators. In addition to her exceptional artistic qualities, her more than 90 opera roles and her around 4,000 performances made her popular as one of the greatest opera singers. In addition to the opera stage and musical theater, she delighted audiences with her heartwarming appearances in talk shows, galas and film documentaries.- Danish writer Sven Hassel was born in Fredericksborg, Denmark, in 1917. He joined the Danish merchant marine when he was 20, and a year later moved to Germany. He eventually wound up in the German army--it's not clear if he was drafted or if he enlisted, even though he was not a German citizen--and served in a tank unit in 1939 during the German invasion of Poland. In 1940 he attempted to desert the army and make his way back to Denmark, but was caught by German military police, court-martialed and sentenced to serve in a "Sonderabteilung", a penal battalion consisting of convicted criminals, deserters and other soldiers the military authorities considered expendable) and sent to the Russian front.--in effect, a death sentence. He served with a variety of tank units, was wounded several times and eventually attained the rank of lieutenant. He received the Iron Cross for bravery in combat. As the war came to a close and the German military began to fall apart, Hassel surrendered to Soviet troops in Berlin in 1945. He spent several years in Russian POW camps before being released. During his time in the camps he began to write stories of his experiences up to that time, and after his release in 1949 he was able to get some of them published.
He was planning to join the French Foreign Legion in 1951 when he met and married a German woman, and instead of fighting for the Legion, he got a job in an automobile factory. In 1957 he suffered a recurrence of an illness he contracted during the war and was paralyzed for two years. After he recovered he began to write more books, and eventually had a successful career as a novelist.

Raquel Meller was born in Tarazona, Zaragoza, Aragón (Spain) from a very poor family. Since her parents could not afford her education she was sent to live with an aunt who was a nun at a convent. At age 12 she returned with her parents who were then residing in Barcelona and shortly after began working as a seamstress in a shop that catered to many show business personalities. In 1907 she left the shop to start singing "cuplés" ("couplets") using the name "La Bella Raquel". Although these songs were considered indecent and were initially performed in venues attended by men only, Raquel with her beauty and charismatic presence raised the "cuplé" genre to a more respectable art making it acceptable to families. After a love affair with a German named Moeller, Raquel adopted his last name changing it to Meller to make it sound Spanish.
The quality of her voice was a source of debate, but for her fans and theater-goers in general Meller could do no wrong. "Raquel Meller is a genius." exclaimed at one point Sarah Bernhardt. Songs such as "La Violetera", "El Relicario", "Flor de Te", "Mimosa", "Flor del Mal", etc., became standards thanks to her interpretation. She was the first Spanish popular singer to succeed in Europe and the Americas including the United States where her recordings enjoyed great popularity and her live concerts in 1926 broke box-office records in the most important American cities. At the height of her popularity she endorsed several products as well as backing many articles named after her from dolls, to perfume, all of which supplemented her already high income making her one of the wealthiest women in the world.
She was also a hit on the big screen, starring in important films such as_Violettes impériales (1923)_and Carmen (1926). Meller filmed mostly in France but in 1927 she starred in a short sound feature for Movietone Fox in New York in which she sang four of her hits. Charles Chaplin, a big Meller fan, offered her the part of Josephine de Beauharnais in a film he was planning based on life of Napoleon Bonaparte but Raquel could not find time for the project. A few years later Chaplin wanted her for the part of the blind girl in _City Lights (1931)_but Raquel was now involved in a play written especially for her by Maurice Rostand in which she could achieve her dream of becoming a serious stage actress in a respectable Paris theater. Chaplin replaced her with Virginia Cherrill but he kept Raquel's theme "La Violetera" in the film music score taking credit for its composition which resulted in a law suit by the song's composer Jose Padilla.
Raquel continued performing and was a big draw in vaudeville circuits well into the 1940s. Her private life was followed with great interest by the media and the public. She was imperious, ruthless (especially with the competition), lovable, funny, temperamental, generous, witty and totally egomaniac. Her love life was not as turbulent as many believed but among her many admirers there were royalty, heads of state, intellectuals, painters and assorted VIPs. In 1919 she married celebrated Guatemalan journalist diplomat Enrique Gomez Carrillo and adopted a baby girl in Buenos Aires naming her Elena. However after a couple of years of honeymoon bliss came a collision of both temperaments and they divorced in 1922. She had another short lived marriage in 1940 this time to a French businessman named Edmond Sayac and they were together long enough to adopt a baby boy whom they named Jordi Enric.
By then Raquel Meller's career was over, only to surface again in 1957 in the wake of Sara Montiel's box-office success in the films_El último cuplé (1957)_ and_La violetera (1958)_,in which Montiel revived Raquel's greatest hits. As with other rivals in the past, Meller became Montiel's nemesis, but by then a new generation that simply did not know her just plain ignored her. She attempted several comebacks but all were critical and commercial failures. Bitterly, she retired and stayed out of the public eye until her death in Barcelona on July 26, 1962. A plan to film her story starring Sara Montiel (of course) was foiled by Meller's relatives, but some of her story made it to the big screen anyway in Montiel's vehicle La reina del Chantecler (1962).
Most of Raquel's recordings, considered lost for years, have been trickling out on CDs. However her films remain unedited in home video formats and are seldom shown in silent films revivals or festivals. Raquel Meller has been the subject of many books and articles in Europe. There are streets named after her in France and Spain, while her statue commands a plaza with her name in Barcelona. It is inexcusable that film preservationists and the cinemateques of France, Spain and the United States have shown little or no interest in Meller's filmography. Without these films it is impossible to assess Raquel's personal charisma which was the source of her enormous success and fame.- Daniela Costa was born in 1981 in Barcelona, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
